Introduction

Vision

With the arrival of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the need for AI professionals has become urgent worldwide, including in South Korea. In response to this demand, Yonsei University established the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 (selecting 50 students annually for its master's and doctoral programs) and subsequently founded the Department of Artificial Intelligence in 2021. The Department of Artificial Intelligence at Yonsei University, which began recruiting its first class of 20 students in 2022, is a newly established department located on the Sinchon campus, aiming to cultivate world-class experts in the field of artificial intelligence, a core technology for future industries. To achieve this, the department offers systematic education in cutting-edge AI technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing, all built upon foundational courses in computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics. Moreover, the department will play a major role in AI convergence education with various other academic fields at Yonsei University, the largest comprehensive university in Korea, positioning itself as the central hub for AI education and research across the entire university.

Research Areas

LE.A.P Program
To overcome the limitations of existing AI technology and develop "lightweight, efficient AI core fundamental technologies that collaborate with humans and use knowledge and perception," research efforts are focused on three key areas: LEarning, Architecture, and Perception. More than 30 related core AI courses have been developed and incorporated into the educational curriculum.
■ LEarning: Research on the advancement of AI learning models and overcoming their limitations, research on explainable AI technologies, and development of human-in-the-loop AI models to lead AI core technologies.
■ Architecture: Research on computer systems and architecture that form AI platforms for accelerating and optimizing AI models, as well as research on next-generation deep learning model accelerators and machine learning architecture design to advance AI computing.
■ Perception: Advancement and optimization of perception technologies for language, speech, and visual recognition, and research on AI+X convergence. Conducting research to enhance the generation, improvement, and understanding of language, speech, and video technologies.
MESH ProgramYonsei University, as a comprehensive university, aims to maximize its strengths by leveraging its rich foundation in AI application research across various fields such as medicine, engineering, business, and humanities. The university focuses on AI+X convergence research in four key application areas (Medicine, Engineering, Financial Service, Humanity) and offers AI convergence courses for all students.
■ AI+Medicine (AI and Medicine Convergence): Based on vast medical data accumulated at Yonsei Medical Center, research and education on AI medical/healthcare technologies and explainable clinical applications are carried out to innovate healthcare services and the medical industry. Leading international universities and medical companies such as MIT, Stanford University, and Cleveland Clinic collaborate as partners. Particularly, domestic startups and SMEs like InBody and Deepnoid are exploring new business opportunities in the medical field, utilizing AI and medical technology as future growth engines.
■ AI+Engineering (AI and Engineering Convergence): Collaborating with the cutting-edge departments of the College of Engineering, AI technologies for future core industries such as smart factories, robotics, and autonomous vehicles are developed and researched. Yonsei builds collaborative systems with domestic and international companies and leading research institutions through various industry cooperation projects and employment-linked internships.
■ AI+Financial Service (AI and Business/Finance Convergence): Close collaboration with the College of Business and the Graduate School of Information to establish AI courses that address entrepreneurship, business, and finance-related problem-solving. Research is conducted on AI-based data interpretation technologies for decision-making in funding and operations at major financial institutions like Barclays and domestic finance companies. The program trains professionals in this area, leading new business ventures and startup programs through YVIP and Yonsei AI Investment Consortium.
■ AI+Humanity (AI and Humanities/Law Convergence): Researching technical and policy issues that can enhance quality of life and create social value through AI technology, and building convergence education and research programs that combine AI with humanities and social sciences, such as AI ethics and law. Particularly, to contribute to the social impact of AI technology, programs focusing on AI technology innovation and diffusion for vulnerable groups and AI at-risk populations are being planned in collaboration with public institutions like the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Career Paths

There is a rapidly growing global demand for AI talent, and graduates of the Department of Artificial Intelligence have a wide range of career opportunities. They can become AI developers or researchers, pursue entrepreneurship by leveraging their skills, or further their expertise by enrolling in graduate programs in artificial intelligence.
